I Need More of this New SX-70 Skin
Before any work can be done on SX-70s and similar cameras, the skin on them needs to be removed. The fact is - the old skins on these cameras are so, well.. old… that they normally just crumble to bits or become very mangled when removed. See below for an example.
That being said, when your camera is serviced, the original skin on it will more than likely need to be replaced. And not just replaced; you can use this as an opportunity to customize the look of your camera!
Nowadays, there are quite a few small businesses that offer replacement skins. They range from more traditional-looking skins, to creative and unique. And the material selection is also varied.
Here are my top 3 favorite replacement skin options at the time of this writing, in no particular order.
I really think all I have to say here is “enough said”. If you’ve read any forum online about replacement SX-70 skins, you’ve more than likely happened upon the name Aki Asahi. The skins that Aki Asahi provides are really great quality, and highly aesthetic. I tend to carry a few of the black crinkle emboss option on-hand.
Mark’s business is a newer one, self-owned and operated in the United States. He specializes in 3d printed replacement skins that are largely more durable than the soft material options out there. With Mark’s skins, I don’t feel like I have to baby my camera as much. Since it’s hard plastic, it’s harder to scratch and ding. Plus, you have the option to customize the design with up to 4 different colors. Here’s an example of one of Mark’s readily available design options.
Colorful Analogue Cameras is based in Europe, specializing in creating replacement skins that are fun, unique, and vibrant. One of my personal cameras has a hand-painted skin from this shop, and I find myself staring at it a few times a day. At first I was anxious because of it being hand-painted. But the owner confided in me that they apply at least 3 layers of varnish on top of each piece so that the beauty is protected. This replacement skin is quite thin overall; but it makes up for it with really amazing art work. Here’s my camera, please ooh and aww with me.
